Trigger Point Release Therapy
Trigger points are hyper irritable spots of skeletal muscle that are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscles fibres. Pain caused by trigger points may radiate from points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself.
Activation of trigger points may be caused by many factors, including acute or chronic muscle overload, activation by other trigger points, disease, homeostatic imbalance, direct trauma to the region, infections and health issues such as smoking.
Trigger points can be released by compression to the area by a health practitioner. Massage therapists may use cold application to numb the area before technique is applied.
